AMENITIES

Jebel Samhan, Dhofar’s highest mountain, is also home to Oman’s Leopard Sanctuary, which requires special permission to visit. But the road leading there is its own reward, passing large baobab, acacia, and frankincense trees, as well as Bedouin settlements.

The nature reserve is a protected area for some of the last wild Arabian leopards and other rare species such as the Arabian wolf and the striped hyena. Also keep an eye out for gazelles, foxes, and Nubian goats.

Pitch a tent on the peak’s plateau for a magical desert camping experience, and stop at the Tawi Ateer Sinkhole to cool off.
